Chapter 27 - THE FAMILY DINNER Months later, Claire invited everyone to dinner.

Not at Harrington House.

At my small home.

There were no chandeliers.

No silver servants.

No inherited wine cellar.

Just a wooden table.

Claire sat beside me.

Daniel brought dessert.

Margaret arrived last.

She looked nervous.

Claire stood.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Claire hugged her.

Not because the past was forgiven.

Because the future deserved a chance.

Margaret cried into her daughter's shoulder.

Daniel looked away.

I laughed softly.

For the first time, we were not pretending.

We were simply a family.

An imperfect one.

But real.

After dinner, Claire gave me a small box.

Inside was Ruth's wedding ring.

“She wanted you to have this.”

I held it carefully.

Then Claire showed me another photograph.

Ruth had taken it shortly after my birth.

I was asleep.

Claire was holding me.

And Margaret stood behind them.

All three women were smiling.

I had never seen that photograph before.

It proved something important.

Before everything broke…

there had been love.
