Chapter 10 - SILVER PINES The call lasted only eleven seconds.
But eleven seconds were enough.
Claire was alive.
We drove through the storm.
Rain hammered the windshield.
Lightning turned the coastline white.
Daniel sat beside me.
“You heard her.”
“Yes.”
“She remembered your name.”
I looked out the window.
“She remembered everything.”
The warehouse appeared through the rain.
Police surrounded it.
Then we heard a scream.
Claire.
I ran inside before anyone could stop me.
Vanessa was dragging a silver-haired woman toward the tunnel.
Claire.
Her eyes met mine.
Gray eyes.
My eyes.
She whispered my name.
“Emily.”
I took one step forward.
Vanessa pulled her closer.
“Stay back.”
“You already ruined everything.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You did that yourself.”
Victor appeared.
He carried a metal case filled with passports and cash.
He ordered Vanessa to leave Claire.
Vanessa refused.
“She is our only leverage.”
Victor stared at his daughter.
“You were supposed to plant the necklace.”
Vanessa's face changed.
“You were never going to protect me.”
“No,” Victor said coldly.
“You were useful.”
Police lights flashed through the windows.
Victor dragged Claire toward the tunnel.
Daniel tackled him.
The metal case exploded open.
Cash scattered across the wet floor.

Victor had rigged the building to burn.
