Chapter 9 - A VOICE FROM TWENTY-FOUR YEARS AGO Smoke filled Harrington Tower.

The records room was burning.

Victor's people were destroying the pension evidence.

Employees flooded the stairways.

Daniel ordered an evacuation.

But Michael remembered something.

The original trust affidavit.

It was inside the secure archive.

We went back.

Smoke crawled beneath the door.

The archive lock jammed.

Daniel forced it open.

We recovered the documents.

And a box.

Inside was a microcassette.

CONFESSION.

Charles Harrington's voice filled the police car.

“Claire will not sign.”

Victor answered.

“Then keep her hidden.”

“What about Emily?”

“I'll find the girl when the time is right.”

My hands shook.

Vanessa had recognized my locket weeks earlier.

She had known exactly who I was.

The necklace trap was never about theft.

It was designed to destroy my credibility before I discovered Claire.

Reyes received another update.

Victor's car had turned west.

Toward the coast.

There was an old Harrington shipping warehouse near the cliffs.

Margaret suddenly remembered an underground tunnel.

It led from the warehouse to a private dock.

A storm was moving in.

If Victor reached the ocean, Claire could disappear again.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's weak voice whispered:

“Emily?”

I couldn't breathe.

Then she said:

“My name is Claire.”
