Chapter 6 - THE KEY IN THE NECKLACE Union Station opened at five.

Reyes arrived with a warrant.

The key matched a private locker rented twenty-four years earlier under Claire's name.

The door opened.

Inside was a weathered suitcase.

A baby blanket.

A video camera.

Trust documents.

Shell-company records.

And a sealed letter addressed to Margaret.

Claire had written it the day before she disappeared.

She had known Charles was watching her.

She had known Victor was involved.

Most importantly, she had known I was in danger.

I was not a mistake.

I was not abandoned.

I had been hidden.

Reyes connected the old camera.

Claire appeared on the screen holding me as a newborn.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

But determined.

“My name is Claire Harrington.”

“If you're watching this, my daughter survived.”

I stopped breathing.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“Emily, if you ever see this…”

Her voice broke.

“I never left because I stopped loving you.”

“I left because staying would have killed you.”

The recording skipped.

A man's voice sounded outside the motel room.

Victor.

“Open the door.”

Claire refused.

Then Charles spoke.

“Take her to Silver Pines.”

The screen went black.

But the audio continued.

Then silence.

Under the suitcase lining, we found another envelope.

The paper was newer.

Inside was a photograph.

A silver-haired woman sitting beside a window.

On the back were five words.

CLAIRE IS ALIVE.

Victor knows where.
