Chapter 29 - THE WOMAN AT THE GATE I thought our story was finally over.

Then one autumn afternoon, an unfamiliar woman walked through the gate.

She was around sixty.

She carried no luggage.

Only an old photograph.

She asked for me.

When I arrived, she looked at Claire.

Then at Margaret.

Then back at me.

“I knew your mother.”

Claire stiffened.

“Who are you?”

The woman handed me the photograph.

It showed Claire and Ruth outside Silver Pines.

But there was someone else standing behind them.

A man I had never seen.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Six months before Claire disappeared.

And three words.

HE WAS THERE.

Claire's face went pale.

“That's impossible.”

The woman shook her head.

“No.”

“He was there.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“Your grandfather.”

I froze.

My great-grandfather had supposedly died years before Claire was born.

The woman smiled sadly.

“That is what Charles wanted everyone to believe.”

Michael was called.

Reyes arrived.

The old photograph was examined.

It was authentic.

No forgery.

No manipulation.

No doubt.

Someone else had been hiding.

Someone connected to the very beginning.

The woman handed me an envelope.

“You're ready now.”

I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

THE HARRINGTON STORY DID NOT BEGIN WITH CLAIRE.

IT BEGAN WITH THE FIRST LIE.

I looked at Claire.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

For the first time in years, I felt that familiar sensation.

The truth was moving again.
