Chapter 4 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE PORTRAIT Margaret finally confessed.

“I thought they were taking Claire to a hospital.”

“Why?”

“She had accused Charles of stealing from the pension fund.”

Claire had discovered millions being moved through shell companies.

Charles called her unstable.

He told Margaret the pregnancy had made her paranoid.

Then Claire tried to leave.

Charles stopped her.

He gave her something to calm her down.

Daniel turned away.

His childhood was collapsing around him.

Michael replayed the footage.

“There is something Claire wrote.”

He showed us her final letter.

She had hidden evidence somewhere Charles would never search.

I looked at the portrait.

Ruth's final message returned to me.

Find the woman in the west-wing portrait.

She knew your mother.

I stepped closer.

Claire's painted hand rested beside a carved wooden rose.

The fireplace had the same rose.

I pressed it.

Click.

The portrait moved.

Behind it was a narrow metal door.

Margaret stared in disbelief.

“I have lived here forty years.”

Inside was a hidden room.

Dust covered the desk.

Three boxes sat beneath it.

The first contained pension statements.

Millions had been transferred into shell companies.

The second contained letters from workers who had lost their retirement savings.

The third was almost empty.

Except for one note.

THE STAR OPENS THE LAST DOOR.

Before we could understand it, the mansion lights went out.

A crash echoed through the foyer.

When the emergency lights came on, Victor and Vanessa were gone.

So was the Harrington Star.

Reyes found something near the hidden door.

A recent payment authorization.

Silver Pines.

A private medical facility.

The payment had been made every month for twenty-four years.

The latest transfer had cleared that morning.

I stared at the document.

“Who was being paid?”

No one answered.

May you like

But I already knew.

Someone had been keeping a secret alive for twenty-four years.
