Chapter 12 - FIRE AT THE OLD WAREHOUSE Margaret stood beneath the rain.

For the first time, she looked small.
“I thought they were taking you to a hospital.”
“You thought.”
Claire laughed once.
A broken sound.
“I begged you to listen.”
Margaret began crying.
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
Claire's words cut through the storm.
“I was twenty-two.”
“I was pregnant.”
“And I was begging my mother to believe me.”
Margaret admitted everything.
Charles had threatened her.
He said he would take Daniel away.
He said the family would collapse.
He forced her to sign a statement calling Claire unstable.
Later, Margaret suspected the truth.
But she chose silence.
“You protected the house,” Claire said.
Margaret nodded.
“You confused the house with the family.”
At the hospital, Claire asked for a mirror.
She touched my face.
“You have Ruth's chin.”
I smiled through tears.
“She would be proud of you.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“She always believed you would find the truth.”
Then Detective Reyes entered.
She had found something on Vanessa's phone.
Photographs of me.
Walking home.
Shopping.
Visiting Ruth's grave.
Someone had been watching me.
The final photograph showed a man standing outside my apartment.

Reyes looked at me.
“He was there tonight.”
