Chapter 3 - THE DAUGHTER WHO VANISHED The room changed after that.

People who had looked at me like a thief were suddenly looking at me like royalty.

I hated both reactions.

Neither had anything to do with who I was.

I had spent twenty-seven years believing I was simply Emily Carter, the daughter of Ruth Carter, the woman who raised me.

Three months earlier, I had taken a housekeeping job at Harrington House because it paid better than my previous work.

I had never imagined that the mansion belonged to my biological family.

Or that my family had spent decades trying to erase me.

Detective Reyes arrived.

She watched the security footage twice.

Then she photographed the red mark on my cheek.

“Do you want to press charges?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa gasped.

“Emily, I panicked.”

“No.”

I looked directly at her.

“You planned it.”

Her eyes hardened.

Then Reyes took her into the library.

Victor followed.

Michael stopped him.

“I represent the trust.”

Victor frowned.

“I am the company's CFO.”

“You are not the trust.”

That distinction suddenly felt important.

Margaret took me into the west-wing sitting room.

A portrait hung above the fireplace.

Claire.

She looked twenty-two.

Young.

Alive.

Happy.

I stared at her face.

It was like looking into a mirror separated by twenty-four years.

Margaret sat beside me.

“I was told she stole the Harrington Star.”

“Did you believe it?”

Margaret looked down.

“Charles showed me bank records.”

“Your husband?”

She nodded.

“He said Claire had stolen company money and disappeared with a married man.”

I looked at the portrait.

“And you believed him?”

Her silence hurt more than her answer.

“Yes.”

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

“I was fourteen.”

His voice was quiet.

“My father told me Claire abandoned us.”

Then a technician arrived.

He had found something in the mansion's old security archives.

A recording from the night Claire disappeared.

We watched.

At 11:17 p.m., Claire appeared at the service entrance.

She was pregnant.

Frightened.

Alive.

Two men forced her into a sedan.

One was Charles Harrington.

The other was Victor Lang.

Then a third person appeared.

Margaret.

May you like

Watching.

She did nothing.
